Power Up Athlete: Belinda Lin

Control what you can control

Belinda Lin grew up in Taiwan playing many different sports, but it wasn’t until she emigrated to Canada at age 12 that she added golf to her repertoire. “My dad got me into it,” she says. “And he’s been very supportive ever since.” She first picked up a club at age 13, and by 15 she was playing competitively. She played on her high school team, while at the same time playing competitive basketball and badminton—she received the Girls Athlete of the Year and Senior Sportsmanship Award in grade 12.

She went on to play more competitive golf at Simon Fraser University, where she earned  second- and third-place standings in several major tournaments. She also played outside SFU, taking first place at the 2019 BCGA Zone 3 Amateur Championship and the 2018 MJT PGA of BC Odlum Brown Classic . Together these wins helped fire her passion and compelled her to continue to play after graduating from university.

“I wanted to keep challenging myself,” she says. “I wanted to compete with the best players in the world.”

More recently, in 2019, she finished second in the GNAC Women’s Golf Championships and helped the SFU women’s team get into the regionals.

Her SFU coaches continue to work with her and motivate her, and she also draws inspiration from professional Taiwanese golfer C.T. Pan.

Among her favourite tips for playing golf is, “Control what you can control”. It’s a common theme among our Power Up athletes, many of whom mention the various forces and factors that make each game a unique challenge. Belinda also strives to “commit to the shot, stay in the present, give 100 percent, and enjoy the process”. And her go-to lesson for life? “Find little things to improve every day.” We look forward to seeing you continue your golfing journey, Belinda—congratulations on your Power Up Bursary!
