Power up Megan Osland

La Puissance au féminin : l’athlète Megan Osland

From competitive hockey to professional golf

Megan Osland was a passionate hockey player long before she became a serious golfer. “I played high-level ice hockey growing up, and golf was something I liked to do in the summers during the hockey off-season,” says the Kelowna, BC native. “My parents introduced me to golf by enrolling me in spring break golf camps to keep me busy.”

Once the golf bug bit, her family enthusiastically supported her efforts. “My grandmother was one of the most passionate golfers in the family,” she says. She went on to earn a full scholarship at San Jose State University, and it was there, after two tournament wins in her senior year (on top of being a dean’s scholar) that she decided she wanted to make golf her career.

That career was paused somewhat when the pandemic hit, but has since picked up speed this year with several notable achievements, including a top-10 finish in the WAPT, second place in the U.S. Women’s Open Qualifier, and an NWGA win. “I won the NWGA Tour event the day after my golf coach of 10 years passed away,” she says. “I truly felt like he was on the course with me that day, and I dedicated my win to him.

Now in Stage 1 of LPGA Q-School, Megan is adding a 2021 DCM Power Up Bursary to her credentials—this is her second; she was first chosen as a recipient in 2019. She remains fiercely determined to succeed, and to that end adheres to some basic personal principles for physical and mental health. Among her golf tips: “Practice with intent and purpose”, and “Practice your short game just as much or more than your long game”. She also advocates mindfulness and meditation to help her “be in the now”, and always remembers that “you will make mistakes; it’s how you react and recover that counts the most”.

“Golf is very similar to life in that there will always be factors out of your control. Each day on the course will present different challenges. You just have to stay focused on the task at hand, learn from your mistakes, and take advantage of the opportunities you’re given.”

Wonderful to have you on our team once again, Megan—here’s to a great year ahead!
