J.R. Kingsley Ward, Chairman of the Board
J.R. Kingsley Ward, Chairman of the Board

J. R. Kingsley Ward has been a director of the company since June 2014 and has served as Chairman since June 2016. Mr. Ward has over 25 years of experience as an investor in, and director of, private equity and public company investments. He began his career in 1991 at Vimy Ridge Group Ltd., a Toronto-based holding company with a portfolio of investments primarily in the health care industry. In 1992, VRG Capital, a division of the Vimy Ridge Group, was formed to develop merchant banking initiatives for Vimy Ridge Group and he served as President of VRG Capital until 2011. In 2011, VRG Capital Corp. was formed to expand its merchant banking activities in partnership with other family offices, where Mr. Ward currently serves as a Managing Partner.

Mr. Ward is also Chairman of: Founders Advantage Capital Corp., a public private equity firm listed on the TSX Venture exchange; Clarus Securities, an institutional investment dealer; Jones Brown Holdings Inc., a privately held Canadian insurance brokerage and strategic consultancy firm; and Nucro Technics, a pharmaceutical contract support organization. He was a founder and former Director of IPEC (now Flint Energy Services) and a founder and former Chairman of Pareto Corporation, a start-up marketing services business which became publicly listed in 2004, and where he remained a director until its sale to a private equity firm in 2011. He is also a past Director of PLM Group, which grew to become a leading publicly traded commercial printing and direct marketing company, until its acquisition by Transcontinental Inc. in 2007.

Mr. Ward is also actively involved in many not for profit entities, including Polo for Heart, a Heart & Stroke Foundation charity event, and the Polo for Health series of charity events and is co-chair of the board of Capitalize for Kids, an investor conference in support of SickKids Hospital, and is a past director of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

Mike Sifton, Director

As CEO, Mike oversees all aspects of DATA Communications Management. He leads by establishing high-trust, constructive relationships with each member of the DATA team through dialogue and empowerment. DATA team members are then free to effectively engage and delight customers.

Mike has had a long and successful career in the newspaper publishing business with extensive operational experience in managing print operations. Mike was President and CEO of Sun Media, and integrated Osprey Media into the company when it was acquired by Sun Media in 2007. Mike led the formation of Osprey Media Group in 2001 and it was taken public in 2004 as Osprey Media Income Fund. Prior to forming Osprey, Mike was President of Hollinger Canadian Newspapers L.P. and President and CEO of family-owned Armadale Communications. Most recently, Mike has been a Managing Director at Beringer Capital, a private equity firm based in Toronto, Canada that focuses on the marketing services, specialty media and advertising industries in North America.

In addition to Mike’s work at DATA, he is a Director of Yellow Pages Limited and is involved in a number of not for profit organizations including as Chairman of the Board of Governors of St. Andrews College in Aurora, Ontario. 

Mike holds a B. Comm (Honours) from Queen's University.

William Albino
William Albino, Director

William Albino has been a Director of the company since August 8, 2012. Prior to his retirement in 2011, Mr. Albino was Chief Executive Officer of Smart Systems for Health, an Agency of the Ontario Government charged with developing and implementing electronic health records for all Ontarians.

Before that assignment, Mr. Albino was an Executive Vice President of EDS Canada, responsible, at various times, for the EDS's business in the Telecommunications, Government, and Manufacturing sectors. He spent two years as head of his own consulting company while acting as an independent investor in start-up technology companies. Mr. Albino's longest employment - 25 years - was with Xerox Corporation where he held numerous positions, in both Canada and the US, culminating in his assignment as Vice-President and General Manager of the company's largest division.

Mr. Albino has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Business Administration from The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He is presently a director of The Aurora Historical Society and the Big Brother and Sisters Council of Champions.

James J. Murray, O.Ont., SIOR, Director

James J. Murray joined DATA’s board in June 2016.  Mr. Murray’s career spans 45 years in the commercial brokerage industry and he is currently the Senior Vice President and Director of Business Development, West GTA, of Cushman & Wakefield Ltd., where his role is that of a team leader on major assignments. Prior to joining Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. Murray was Senior Vice President and Managing Director and a Partner of J.J. Barnicke Limited and, following the company’s sale, with DTZ Barnicke Limited.

Mr. Murray has been an active businessman and civic participant in the Mississauga, Ontario community and surrounding region for several years, and, together with significant volunteering, has held roles on several community boards and been awarded several awards.  

Mr. Murray is presently a member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and is President and Chair of the Hazel McCallion Foundation for Arts, Heritage and Culture. He has previously served as a board member and vice chair of the Peel Regional Police Service and on the Board of Governors of the Credit Valley Hospital, each for 12 years. Mr. Murray was named “Business Person of the Year” by the Mississauga Board of Trade in 2009 and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and the Order of Ontario award in 2015.

Derek J. Watchorn, Director

Derek J. Watchorn joined the company’s board in June 2016.  For the past six years, Mr. Watchorn has been acting as a consultant on several projects, notably as a member of the management committee involved with the redevelopment of the Buttonville Airport land and, until recently, in respect of a joint venture involving a major shopping centre and several other properties in Budapest. Mr. Watchorn, a lawyer by trade, has extensive experience in the real estate industry through a variety of senior management and director positions he has held with both public and private organizations in Ontario and abroad.

He is a director of Timbercreek Financial Corp., a member of its Audit Committee and Chairman of its Corporate Governance Committee, and held similar positions with Timbercreek Mortgage Investment Corporation until its amalgamation with Timbercreek Senior Mortgage Investment Corporation in June 2016, to form Timbercreek Financial, a TSX listed company. Mr. Watchorn was formerly the President and CEO of Revera Inc. (formerly Retirement Residences REIT) from October 2004 until June 2009. Prior to that, he served in London, England as Executive Vice President of Canary Wharf plc from January 2003 until June 2004 and as Executive Director of TrizecHahn plc from January 1999 until June 2001. Mr. Watchorn was a senior partner of the law firm Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, which he joined as a solicitor in 1968 and became partner of in 1970. During the period from 1987 to 2004 (excluding his tenure with TrizecHahn), Mr. Watchorn was a senior advisor to the Paul Reichmann family in Toronto and, in that capacity, during a three year period from 1987 until 1990, served on a seconded basis as Executive Director of Olympia & York Canary Wharf plc. Mr. Watchorn was previously a director of Patheon Inc., a TSX-listed company, until its privatization in 2014.

Mr. Watchorn is presently Chairman of Polo for Heart, and was previously a member of the Board of Governors and Chairman of ORTECH Corporation (formerly the Ontario Research Foundation) and Chairman of HSC Research Corporation, a subsidiary of the Hospital for Sick Kids.

James is a senior finance professional with more than 20 years of capital markets and senior leadership experience, having previously worked extensively as an investment banker advising leading small and mid-cap, high growth companies.

He began his investment banking career with Midland Walwyn Capital (now Bank of America Merrill Lynch) and subsequently was a co-founder, head of investment banking and a member of the executive committee of Clarus Securities, a leading Canadian institutional-focused investment dealer.  He later held a senior role with Ludwig Wessel & Associates, a boutique executive search firm specializing in the capital markets, and then advised a private equity fund and its portfolio companies on debt & equity financings and mergers & acquisitions, prior to joining DATA in May, 2015.   

At DATA, James plays a key role in the strategic direction of the Company, helping align business and finance strategy to support the long term direction of the Company, and developing and implementing capital markets and M&A strategies. He leads the finance & accounting team to ensure financial compliance and communication of value and risks to investors and our board of directors, and is responsible for providing the proper financial planning and analysis tools and leadership to the organization. James also supports corporate initiatives to drive business and process improvement changes to add value.

James holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University and an MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University.

Gregory Cochrane
Gregory J. Cochrane, President

As President, Greg has overall operating responsibility for the company. He's had an extensive career in marketing services, communication and event management, as well as private equity investment. Greg began his marketing career in product management with General Electric and then S.C. Johnson. In 1981 he bought into Mariposa Communications. By 1997, when the company was sold to Mosaic Group, he and his partner had built the largest event company in Canada. 

In 2001 he became a lead investor in Pareto Corporation, a start-up marketing services business which became a publicly traded entity in 2004. He served as a director until 2010, when the company was sold to a private equity firm.

In 2011 Greg joined VRG Capital, a private equity family office, being the lead investor and a director in a number of public and private companies including Wheels Group, Capri Media Group, Jones Brown Insurance Brokerage and Founders Advantage Capital. In 2016 he joined Data Communications as an investor and director.

Greg currently serves as Chair of the Board for Jones Brown and is on the advisory boards of Clarus Securities, Kensington Capital and Lumira Capital.

He is a founding donor of the Centre for Business Venturing at Queen’s University and is a member of the Business School’s Advisory Board. Greg is also the co-chair for “Capitalize 4 Kids,” Canada’s premier investment conference. He has served on boards for groups and associations such as Junior Achievement, The Down Syndrome Association of Toronto, The Canadian Business Hall of Fame, St. Josephs Health Centre, and several others. In 1992, Greg received Canada’s 125th Commemorative Anniversary medal for volunteerism in the community.

Greg has an MBA from The Smith School of Business at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, and a BBA from Bishops University in Lennoxville, Quebec.

Karl Spangler
Karl Spangler, Chief Technology Officer

Karl is a leading technical executive focused on innovation and strategy to deliver superior development and operation of real-time systems.

His career has spanned business management and technical consulting to many fortune 500 companies in the Finance, Telecom, Aerospace, Publishing, Media and Entertainment verticals. His background in Digital Asset Management (DAM) and Enterprise Content Management (ECM) have helped many organizations gain a competitive edge in their respective markets. He has held progressively higher technical leadership roles at North Plains Systems, Blackberry, and TD Bank in the areas of professional services, software development, global operations and engineering.

At DATA, Karl leads the IT vision, development and operation of the company’s information systems to provide superior business value. He works closely with the product team to identify and support new product or solution opportunities for DATA's customers. He also leads the R&D efforts to discover or create the new technologies that will keep DATA at the forefront and ensure client success.

Karl studied Economics at the University of Waterloo and has completed leadership and executive training through Blackberry and TD Bank.  He holds certifications in ITIL & SCRUM.

Senior Vice President, Operations
Alan Roberts, Senior Vice President, Operations

Alan is a highly respected industry leader with an extensive background in digital production, publishing and marketing communications.

He began his career at The Printing House Ltd in management and developed his career within that organization to both Vice President of Marketing and Vice President of Business Development. Alan played a significant role in rapid expansion of their branch network and establishing TPH as retail leader in digital printing. In addition Alan held positions as General Manager for Patient News Publishing a recognized leader in dental newsletters in North America and with Xerox Canada where he was the Program Manager for Communication and Marketing Services as part of Xerox Global Services.

At DATA, Alan is responsible for all Operations in Canada and the United States. Alan leads a group of General Managers who are responsible for plant operations and an operations support group in Engineering, Strategic Sourcing, Operations Technology, and Logistics who support the business. Alan is leading the operations transformational change in the business and is responsible for developing and implementing new capabilities that contributes to top line revenue growth and profitability for the company.

Alan studied Marketing Management at the Richard Ivey School of Business.

Senior Vice President Sales
Steve Wittal, Senior Vice President Sales

Steve is a highly regarded sales leader with more than 25 years of experience in the print and digital communications space.

His career began in a family owned print enterprise until he left the printing industry to join the London Chamber of Commerce as their Director of Marketing. Steve was then recruited back into the graphic communications space, joining DATA in 1995.

Steve's career with DATA began in the Southwestern Ontario market. In London, Steve worked closely with mid-market manufacturing and healthcare clients. With the acquisition of Relizon, Steve and his family relocated to Kitchener and his focus changed to enterprise clients in the financial services and retail verticals.

Steve has served in a variety of progressively more senior roles at DATA. In his current capacity, Steve owns revenue and leads all sales and customer experience activities in Canada and the US. Steve is responsible for client acquisition and retention strategy and is leading our sales force transformation initiative. Steve is known for his competitive spirit and ability to build and lead strong management teams.

Judy Holcomb-Williams
Judy Holcomb-Williams, Vice President, Human Resources

Judy is an accomplished business leader, with progressive HR leadership experience with Fortune 500 companies. As a recognized thought leader she brings to DATA extensive experience of driving transformative change in the areas of strategy development, sales culture transformation and organizational capability. As a Culture and Change Navigator she has successfully designed and implemented new corporate cultures, organizational structures and systems and led organizations through successful change initiatives while retaining overall employee engagement.

As the business leader within the HR function she enhances organizational effectiveness and competitiveness by providing HR leadership, support and programs that are aligned with DATA’s business goals, objectives and strategy. She has deep expertise in the areas of Talent Management, Culture and Change Management (Organization and Sales), Organizational Design/Work Process Design, Business Leadership - Strategic Process Development.

She is a graduate of the Advanced HR Program, Executive Program, Rotman School of Management and obtained her Global Human Resources Certification in 2007 (SHRM) and is a graduate of the University of Windsor, Honours, Bachelor, Human Kinetics.
