DCM PGA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER FOR 2018

When Jessica Porvasnik was awarded her golf scholarship at Ohio State University back in 2012, the head women’s golf coach at OSU noted that “Jessica has high expectations and a fantastic work ethic.” She was right: Porvasnik has gone on to win a number of tournaments across Ohio. But the DCM PGA Women’s Championship of Canada is a milestone among them: it’s her first professional win outside the state.

“There are some pretty impressive names on the trophy,” says Porvasnik, “so to win this championship is very special to me.” She completed the 36 holes at the Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto at 4-under-par—one shot better than Canadian Aram Choi and Mexico’s Sandra Angulo Miñarro. Her first-place prize was $10,000.

The DCM PGA Women’s Championship of Canada was first established in 1987, with DCM becoming lead sponsor in 2017. The tournament has been host to some of golf’s most talented female players, including Lorie Kane, Brooke Henderson, Alena Sharp, Cathy Sherk, Gail Graham, Nancy Harvey, and Jessica Shepley.

To further support female golfers and help bridge the resource gap between men’s and women’s golf, DCM has established the Power Up Bursary Program. Established in 2018, the Power Up Bursary is an annual award that helps promising female golfers through financial assistance, increased player visibility, training and skill development, sponsorship coaching, and marketing and PR training. The program’s goal is to support top Canadian female golfers on the brink of LPGA Tour status by giving them the opportunities they deserve.

“Support for women’s sport and women’s golf, in particular, lags considerably behind the funding for men’s golf in this country,” says DCM President and CEO Greg Cochrane. “We believe DCM support can make a difference for many of these professional athletes working to reach their goals of playing and winning on the LPGA Tour.”

That means more opportunity for talented young players like Porvasnik, and a better chance of professional success. Congratulations on your win, Jessica—we wish you all the best on your LPGA journey.
